Core Statutory Takeaway

On €4,000 monthly gross salary in 2026, take-home pay is €2,928.17 in Class III vs €2,185.09 in Class V — a €743.08 monthly withholding gap.

  • A German Steuerklasse (tax class) determines monthly wage-tax withholding, not your ultimate annual tax liability (the difference is reconciled upon filing your annual return).
  • Debunking the myth: Tax Classes III and V are NOT being abolished. The proposed phase-out was eliminated from the final 2024 legislation, and the 2025 coalition agreement contains no mention of abolition.
  • The 2026 tax-free basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag) is €12,348, and the 42% Spitzensteuersatz bracket begins at €69,879.
  • Class V places almost the entire tax burden on the secondary earner, reducing their monthly take-home pay and diminishing wage-replacement benefits (Elterngeld, maternity, sick pay).
  • Married couples can select IV/IV, III/V, or the Factor Method (IV/IV mit Faktor), and can switch tax classes through November 30.
  • Freelancers, sole proprietors, and founders do not have a tax class: they pay quarterly advance income tax payments.

⚠️ Tax Settlement Warning:Annual total tax liability (Einkommensteuer) is 100% identical regardless of tax class once you file your tax return. Steuerklasse III/V mandates filing and frequently results in a clawback payment (Nachzahlung) if Partner B earns more than 40% of the household income.

1. What Is a Steuerklasse?

A Steuerklasse (tax class) is an administrative withholding category established under §38b of the German Income Tax Act (Einkommensteuergesetz - EStG). It instructs your employer how much wage tax (Lohnsteuer) to withhold from your monthly paycheck.

Crucially, your tax class does not determine your final annual tax liability. When you file your annual tax return (Steuererklärung), the Finanzamt calculates your actual tax based on your joint annual income. Any over-withholding is refunded, and any under-withholding must be paid back.

2. The Six German Tax Classes (Steuerklassen I to VI)

Class I: Single, divorced, or permanently separated employees, as well as foreign employees with limited tax liability.

Class II: Single parents entitled to the single-parent tax relief allowance of €4,260 per year (plus €240 for each additional child).

Class III: Married employees whose spouse earns significantly less and is enrolled in Class V. Class III incorporates double the basic allowance (€24,696).

Class IV: Married couples with roughly equal earnings. Both spouses receive standard individual basic allowances. This is the default automatic classification upon marriage.

Class V: The partner of a spouse in Class III. Class V transfers its basic allowance to the Class III partner, resulting in exceptionally high monthly withholding.

Class VI: Applied to a second or subsequent employment contract. It carries zero basic allowances and incurs the highest withholding rates.

3. 2026 Statutory Parameters & Thresholds

Under the Growth Opportunities Act and budget ordinances, Germany adjusted its statutory income tax brackets for 2026 to offset cold progression (bracket creep):

Statutory ItemTax Year 2025Tax Year 2026Annual Adjustment

4. Myth Busted: Classes III and V Are NOT Being Abolished

Numerous outdated guides claim that Germany is phasing out Tax Classes III and V. This is factually incorrect.

While a government draft in September 2024 proposed transitioning all III/V couples into Class IV with a factor by 2030, the Bundestag Finance Committee explicitly deleted that provision before passing the legislation in December 2024.

Classes III and V remain fully available in statutory law, and the 2025 CDU/CSU/SPD coalition agreement contains no mention of eliminating spousal splitting or tax classes.

5. What Class V Really Costs: A €743 Monthly Withholding Gap

Using the Federal Ministry of Finance's official 2026 wage tax calculator, we simulated take-home pay for an identical €4,000 gross monthly salary across different tax classes for a childless employee in Berlin without church tax (social contributions: 9.3% pension, 1.3% unemployment, 8.75% health, 2.4% care = 21.75% total):

Important warning: Parental allowance (Elterngeld), unemployment benefits (Arbeitslosengeld I), maternity pay (Mutterschaftsgeld), and sick pay (Krankengeld) are calculated based on net take-home pay on your payslip. Being in Class V significantly depresses these statutory benefits. If you are planning a pregnancy or job transition, switch to Class IV well in advance.

6. The Factor Method (Faktorverfahren): A Fairer Middle Ground

Couples seeking the tax advantages of spousal splitting without penalizing the lower earner's monthly paycheck can opt for Class IV with Factor (Faktorverfahren under §39f EStG).

The Finanzamt calculates your estimated joint annual tax liability under spousal splitting, divides it by the total tax that would be withheld under standard Class IV/IV, and applies that resulting factor (e.g. 0.85) to each spouse's monthly withholding. This ensures both payslips reflect accurate proportional contributions.
